One of the most common problems a to-be-mom has to deal with is the development of varicose veins on the lower part of her body, particularly the legs, vagina and rectum (varicose veins here are called hemorrhoids). The word “varicose” stems from the Latin word “varix”, which translates to “twisted”. As the uterus expands, it presses against neighboring veins. These veins in the area transport blood from the lower extremities back to the heart and lungs for oxygenation. The pressure from the uterus causes them to work harder than usual, making their walls weak and swollen. Pregnancy hormones also cause their walls to expand, giving the veins that bluish, swollen appearance under the skin. Varicose veins may cause some discomfort, and have a negative impact on a pregnant woman’s self-esteem.
